Liam Payne might be high on life following the release of his debut solo single, but One Direction fans have a lot to say about a certain lyric that references his time in the band in a less-than-positive light.
The particular line in ‘Strip That Down’ that caused all this hoo-hah comes when Liam claims that he’s finally “free” from the group, implying that he felt trapped by his time with the band: “You know I used to be in 1D, but now I’m out free,” he sings.
Some fans are feeling a bit ruffled by the lyrics, pointing out that the message doesn’t line up with all the positive things he’s always said about the band and puts a bit of a downer on their legacy: “I can’t believe Liam really used that lyric in his first song,” one wrote.

why would liam say “idk why zayn didn’t like it in the band” and have a lyric like, I used to be in 1d and now I’m “free” tho

Meanwhile other fans reckon we should all just chill out a bit and not read too much into a lyric that was probably never meant to cause offense and is actually just a celebration of his new solo chapter.
Liam talks about how proud he is to be a member of 1D and always praises the other boys and one lyric gets you mad? Sorry, can’t relate

Yikes. What a palaver.
