Thanks to the likes of Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid and Rihanna, there’s been a huge surge in the number of people getting nipple piercings over the last few years.
So if you’re someone who’s toying with the idea of getting your boob pierced, here’s everything you need to know before going under the needle…
Have a scout around online for local piercing places and then go and look at them in person. Speak to people who have previously had piercings and ask questions about their experience there! If a place looks a bit grotty, go with your gut and look elsewhere.
Nipple piercings sting more than anything. The piercer will clamp your nipple to isolate the area (ooh and also ahh), but this will actually reduce the pain, as the skin is held taught and tight.
Some places will offer to freeze the area first, however this can lead to skin problems after so might be worth giving it a miss.
You can get horizontal or vertical – but horizontal is often more common.
Piercers will often recommend a bar as it allows for swelling to heal better. The bar might be longer than you thought – which, again, is to allow for swelling around the area. You can then swap the jewellery for whatever you fancy when it heals.
Your nipple piercing should be cleaned morning and night. The best way to do this is to fill a cup with boiling water and allow to cool. Add natural rock salt (which is better than sea salt or table salt as it’s purer) and hold the cup to the nipple for a couple of minutes. Then use an ear bud to wipe off any areas that go a little bit and let it dry off naturally.
Don’t rub dry with a towel as this can irritate the area!
The healing process is about 10 weeks. You can’t go in public baths or swimming pools for the first 1-2 weeks.
Aaand there you have it! A nipple piercing any of the model insta-squad would be proud of.
