Here at MTV we’re no strangers to a Harry Styles show after seeing him wow fans last year at London’s Eventim Apollo during his first solo tour. As such big fans we knew we couldn’t miss the first of his two shows at London’s O2 Arena, so we headed down to see what Mr Styles had to offer this time around.
Before we move onto the main event we have to give a massive shout out to MTV Brand New For 2018 winner, and Harry’s support act, Mabel. Our girl did us proud and proved that one day she’ll be selling out arenas just like Mr Styles. Her set was amazing as she performed huge hits such as ‘Fine Line’ and ‘Finders Keepers’ and we couldn’t have been more impressed.
Greeted by the absolute pandemonium we come to expect for a One Direction superstar, the circular screen on the stage lifted revealing the one and only Harry Styles as he opened with ‘Only Angel’.
Kicking things off with a bang he went straight into another upbeat sing-a-long in the form of ‘Woman’, all the while showing off those signature dance moves we’ve come to know and love. He then took it down a notch with his softer ballads, ‘Ever Since New York’ and ‘Two Ghosts’.
One thing we adore about Harry Styles’ solo shows is his ability to work the crowd – throughout the whole show there were no awkward silences between songs, mainly due to the deafening screams, but often due to Harry’s adorable interactions with the crowd. We’re pretty sure the people he chose to speak to had their night/week/whole LIFE made after those interactions. Yes, we were pretty jealous because he didn’t speak to us…
A highlight of the night was when Harry treated us to a brand new song called ‘Medicine’. He’s been playing it live on this tour so due to the wonders of social media, the crowd already knew every word and screamed it back as if it was already a hit single. We can’t wait to hear a studio version, it’s a banger!
Harry’s live shows are known for including a cover or two and last night was no different. He performed the song he wrote for Ariana Grande, ‘Just A Little Bit Of Your Heart’ as well as crowd-favourite ‘The Chain’ by Fleetwood Mac. Of course he couldn’t do a solo show without playing a few One Direction songs too – he performed some of our absolute faves: ‘Stockholm Syndrome’, ‘If I Could Fly’ and ‘What Makes You Beautiful’.
The rest of the set was amazing, including an cool set change where he basically played in the middle of the crowd, making a huge venue like The O2 feel very intimate. We could literally write a book of reasons why we love Harry but for now we’ll leave you with some more pictures from the night…
