The situation escalated when Kem was left with kidney failure after an operation on his tonsils went wrong aged 14.

“After the operation — I’d lost so much weight — my football started going downhill so I lost all my confidence. I thought everyone was looking at me and it just escalated. I refused to go out to public places.”

Like so many other schoolchildren with anxiety problems, the experience resulted in Kem’s grades slipping, which in turn resulted in bad exam results and a real knock to his self-confidence.

Kem Cetinay has opened up about his personal battle with anxiety and depression after revealing that he struggled with mental health issues during his school years.

The Love Island star spoke out in honour of World Mental Health Day – an initiative that pal Chris Hughes also threw his support behind with a particularly emotional Topman campaign.

Let’s all get checking out a brief overview of the saga going on between Chris and Katie Price right now…

Revealing that his experience began when his mum fell ill, Kem told The Sun that he soon became “obsessive” about checking on her health. “I wouldn’t leave her side,” he said.

“My confidence dropped, I couldn’t get on trains. It was the first time I’d had a panic attack, I didn’t know what it was.”

He continued: “There was a point in the three-year spell I wasn’t really living, I wasn’t doing anything. I was completely depressed.”

After burning through eight therapists, Kem explained that his mental health has thankfully improved in his twenties, and credits girlfriend Amber Davies with being the one to “turn his life around.”
